LA Surgeon Says Cosmetic Surgery Should Bring Confidence to Patient

LA plastic surgeon says cosmetic surgery should bring confidence and self esteem to patients
Los Angeles, CA / While looking better is definitely a goal of cosmetic surgery, the end result should also bring a new level of confidence and self-esteem to the patient, said LA plastic surgeon Debra L. Stafford, M.D., F.A.C.S.

“The goal of this kind of operation is to bring a person’s outside more inline with what they feel on the inside,” she said. “When a person’s belief about themselves matches what they look like on the outside, then the person is going to see a serious boost in their outlook, self-esteem and general attitude.”

A lot of surgeons in this field only worry about what the patient will look like in the end. Dr. Stafford said too few spend time with the patient to find out why the person wants a certain cosmetic surgery procedure. That’s a critical part of any such operation, she said.
“If a person has a goal to reach, then the doctor needs to know what that goal is. Sometimes what the patient wants to achieve and what they think they want as a cosmetic procedure don’t line up, If the surgeon goes ahead with the operation and the patient doesn’t reach his goal, that patient is going to say the doctor was a failure,” the LA plastic surgeon said.

In one sense, that’s not correct, she said. If the survey achieved the physical results, then it was done correctly. However, if the patient doesn’t get in the inner results, a boost to self esteem and so forth, then the surgery was a failure.

“A patient needs to know what the physical results of a cosmetic surgery will be. Absolutely. At the same time, the patient needs to have a frank discussion with the LA plastic surgeon to discuss what non-physical changes the person wants,” Dr. Stafford said.

She offered the following points to discussion with a plastic surgeon when considering cosmetic procedures:
• Why do you want the operation, aside from physical changes?
• What do you hope to accomplish?
• How will this change you?

“Anyone considering cosmetic surgery should have a full understanding of the medical part as well as the psychological part,” Dr. Stafford said. “Plastic surgeons treat more than a body, they treat person.”
