Two premier LA hair stylists explain why they chose cosmetology for a career path
For some people, managing hair is not just a job choice. For two LA hair stylists, Jennifer and Elie J, it’s far more than that.
“It’s really a passion for people,” Jennifer said. “Sure, we work with hair, but what we’re really doing is changing the way a person looks to match their personality, their attitude and their outlook. We try to understand who a person wants to be and what they want to say in a physical way.”
That’s a common reason for going into the cosmetology fields, say instructors and teachers in the industry. The students have a passion for working with people and want to turn that into something useful and productive, they said.
“This is more than just a way to make a living,” Elie said. “We could do a lot of different things and make money to live on. It’s a way to make a difference for someone. We use our skills to help people look better obviously, but it’s how they feel when we’re done. That’s the real payoff and reward.”
The LA hair stylists have a particular passion for working with wedding parties. They said a wedding should be one of the most important events in a person’s life. Because weddings are also full of pictures that will be admired for years to come, appearances are critical.
“There’s so much attention focused on the way the bride looks in particular. The dress, jewelry, shoes, hair and makeup. A bunch of people spend a lot of time making sure everything comes together perfectly. They have to work together and they have to give the bride exactly what she wants. That can be a real challenge,” Jennifer said.
