Inositol May Help Treat Children With Bipolar Spectrum Disorder

The outcome of a preliminary double-blind randomized clinical trial has led to the finding that inositol in combination with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) omega-3 fatty acids can help treat prepubescent children who are diagnosed with bipolar spectrum disorder.

Anthony Davidson from inositol powders says "It's always promising to see new research showing the vast benefits thatinositol canprovide for users. We are excited for this research to be expanded upon over the next few years."

In this clinical trial, researchers used 24 children who ranged in age 6 to 12, all who had met the criteria for one of the types of bipolar spectrum disorder. The trial lasted 12 weeks and at the end of the trial, those children who were treated with the combination of omega-3 fatty acids and inositol had great improvements on the Young Mania Rating Scale. The other group was given only one out of the two drugs plus a placebo, and the results from that group was barely any change on the Young Mania Rating Scale.

The findings suggest that EPA omega-3 fatty acids and inositol combined can lead to similar positive outcomes as pharmaceutical treatment options. The study also showed that these two substances are not as beneficial when taken separately, but many benefits can be found if it's used as a combination treatment. While inositol has already been shown to be effective at treating the adult population in the right circumstances, this was the first clinical trial to focus solely on young children who are suffering with this condition.

The research shows a lot of promise in the field of alternative medicine and also is another added benefit of taking inositol, which is basically a naturally occurring carbohydrate that can help stabilize mood and decrease anxiety. Inositol also does not contain negative side effects like pharmaceutical drugs, so this means there is less risk associated with consuming it, and that is often a big concern in the prepubescent population.
