Steve Kimmelman, A Viking Heads South

Beachwood, Ohio / Steve Kimmelman sits courtside at Cleveland State basketball games, focused on his beloved Vikings. Yes, Steve enjoys the pregame reception with all the other boosters, helping himself to the sumptuous spread. Many times he is busy pointing his guests to the different buffet stations, happily reminding them that this is not the time to skip desert, not with this many choices staring them in the face.

But when the clock says the game is imminent, Steve Kimmelman is all business. And it’s the green and white uniformed CSU Vikings that receive his intensive concentration.

It’s one of the rare stretches of time that his company, Redwood Living, is not sending all other thoughts to the bench. At least for the regulation forty minutes of playing time (there’s no telling what enters his head during timeouts).

As the CEO of Redwood Living, a Cleveland-based developer and manager of apartment home communities throughout Ohio, Michigan and Indiana, Kimmelman has helped Redwood grow into a premier, and profitable, development company. Redwood builds multifamily apartment communities that feel more like single family housing, for a lot of reasons.

All Redwood communities are made up of single-story apartment with no upstairs or downstairs neighbors. Every apartment also has its very own private attached garage and a host of interior features that distinguish it from a typical apartment. In other words, people end up felling like they live in a neighborhood of single family homes.

In fact, Kimmelman says, “We get a lot of people calling or stopping by wondering what our apartment homes sell for, and we have to immediately set them straight—these are rentals!”
But having to make sure people understand that these are rental apartments is a small price to pay for success.

Steve Kimmelman is quick to point out his and Redwood’s satisfaction, “We are thrilled that people enjoy the peace and quiet of our communities, the maintenance free convenience, the attached garage, etcetera. It makes us feel that we are making a difference in people’s lives”
And now Steve Kimmelman is setting off in a new direction, literally. Like the Vikings who left their home base in search of opportunities, Kimmelman, a proud modern-day CSU Viking, is steering the Redwood ship south.

Redwood will soon be welcoming residents into communities in Kentucky, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Kimmelman says he doesn’t know exactly how far south Redwood will grow, but he does know that if Redwood’s success in the Midwest is any indication, it could well be a long journey.

Steve Kimmelman would be well coached to make sure his Viking ships are well stocked with supplies.
