Compounding pharmacies can guarantee medicine ingredients

No worries about fillers, questionable ingredients when ordering from a compounding pharmacy

Long Beach, CA / A report in Military Times says a contractor for Tricare is going to start screening compound medications to make sure all the ingredients are approved by the Federal Drug Administration.

Med Compounders co-owner Dr. Nousheen Tabibzadeh said she doesn’t have a problem with that kind of screening.

“A compounding pharmacy should be up-front with all the ingredients they use. People come to compounding pharmacies to get medications major pharmaceutical companies don’t make. They also come to compounders to get exactly what their doctor has prescribed and only what was prescribed,” she said.

News stories about drugs with potentially harmful ingredients being shipped from overseas is just one of the problems, said co-owner Dr. Deborah Behmanesh Markzar.
“Some filler ingredients can cause harmful reactions. Just because it says ‘natural’ does not mean it is safe for everyone. Some people are allergic to seafood, which is natural. If they eat shrimp, they can have a dangerous allergic reaction,” she said.
The pharmacists said it is the same thing with mass-produced medications. Filler ingredients can cause allergic reactions.

“That’s why we don’t have major objections to an FDA-oversight of compounding pharmacies. If your doctor prescribes a certain medicine in a certain amount, you should get that. If it needs a buffer, then when a responsible compounding pharmacy can make sure it’s something that does not interfere with any other medication you take and be sure it’s not something you are allergic to,” Dr. Tabibzadeh said.

Compounding pharmacies also offer another degree of assurance: quality ingredients.
“We order our or supplies only from approved pharmaceutical companies with a reputation for integrity. We combine these in our pharmacy under carefully controlled conditions. This ensures you get exactly what you need,” Dr. Markzar said.
