Greg Millette is going to do some time in a haunted jail cell in hopes that a number of preschool children can avoid a similar fate down the line
Beginning at 6:00pm on June 12, Millette will be reading Fyodor Dovstoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment cover to cover in one sitting – probably about twenty-four hours – from a haunted cell in Ashburn’s historic Crime and Punishment Museum.
Why, you may ask, would he subject himself to sleep deprivation and possibly a ghost?
“GreenTree Learning Center provides such a valuable service both to children and their parents,” said Millette. “These parents would struggle to send their children to a full-priced center, and they might have to quit jobs or school without the discounted choice of GreenTree.”
GreenTree is a nonprofit day care providing a high-quality early learning experience at little or no cost to children in low-income families. Parents must be working or attending school to qualify.
“We’ve hit some hard times following the end of a major grant,” continued Millette, “and we’re hoping folks will support GreenTree through this rough patch.”
Research shows that early literacy is a prime indicator of success in later life. In fact, some states use 3rd-grade reading level as an accurate measure of how many prison cells they will need in subsequent decades. By helping at-risk students in low-income homes get an early start on their education, GreenTree can literally help reduce future crime rates and prison populations. Instead, the center can provide children with a strong foundation on which they can build a pathway out of poverty to a life of financial freedom.
